What or who is Hamez? Are you Islamic? It sounds Middle Eastern.
I lived in northern New Mexico for a time several years ago. While there, I lived near Jemez hot springs, which many people pronounce Hamez, (the “a” sounding like aaah) although the proper pronunciation is closer to Hay-mess or Hay-mish. People started calling me Hamez, saying that it sounded like James would be in Spanish if Spanish had an equivalent of James. Jemez hot springs is actually named after the Jemez Nation, who live nearby in the Jemez Pueblo. The word Jemez is a Spanish mispronunciation of the name that the people of the pueblo gave themselves.
As for the middle eastern connection...yes, it turns out that there are some Islamic or rather Arabic ties. Hamez is an Arabic name meaning to be stout, strong, powerful, to be bold. But there is also a Hebrew word Hamez, which means leaven, or fermented dough. Hamez does seem to be a rather common name in the middle east; perhaps an equivalent of James, although I cannot confirm this.
All of that aside, why did I name my company House of Hamez? I have many interests, from tie-dye to writing fiction, from spicy candy to gourmet cooking, from music to Living Wall Gardens. I wanted my business name to express the many interests I have, and so I thought, “Well, a house has many rooms...” and frankly, House of James just didn’t have a ring to it.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but that’s what’s with the name.
